Over the weekend, in a gun control debate, language inflamed to the point where users walked right up to the line of wishing each other dead. Death Wishing is a huge deal. At a minimum I suspend for a month when I see this. Users without a strong, positive history will be banned. There was also the case of a self-doxing within the heated conversation about the right to bear arms and how it one would defend that right.
One user rage quit over the conversation. Another was suspended a month. That month long suspension is being reduced to a week. A majority of the suspension was based on how others interpreted their statements, not on the pure language of their statements.
The user that rage quit and said they and their family were willing to defend their rights to the death notified me that they understood that they increased the tension of the debate; that they want to rejoin Newsvine; and that they should be suspended for whatever length the other offenders were suspended.
Those statements, as well as the statements from the user with the month-long suspension prompted me to re-evaluate the conversation with clean eyes. It was tense, inflammatory and hateful by both sides. It was also confusing due to varying quotation and reply methods being used.
After discussing with Sally and both users that were most significantly affected (and not those who merely had comments removed in order to focus the conversation on issues and ideas) the following determination and promises were made;
- peacekitten is only suspended a week. They will again be ignoring Cold Vengeance, as is their standard practice.
- Cold Vengeance account is restored, though suspended a week. They will be ignoring 2nd amendment debates.
Hopefully, through this communication I can make it clear that my focus is on fostering a strong community than defending my actions, or merely just suspending/banning and moving on to other users. I regret that a couple long-time members aren't using the site for a few days. But I do not think the Spirit and Purpose of Newsvine was upheld in that conversation. I am confident it will be in the future, by everyone involved.
