In my mind, this conversation is crucial. We have to be able to acknowledge religion as previously being the best tool we had for understanding the world (which means accepting the 'good'), and we also have to able to acknowledge religion is now no longer the best tool we have for understanding the world we live in (which means accepting the 'bad'). Generally, we lack the capacity to have this discussion because a contingent of one side of the discussion only wants to acknowledge the good, while the other side only wants to acknowledge the bad.
